Your Fall Yard Cleanup Checklist

Before and after fall leaf cleanup on a residential lawn

Fall is the most important season for your lawn’s long-term health. A little work now prevents snow mold, matted turf, and a slow spring green-up.

The Checklist

  1. Remove leaves regularly. A thick mat of leaves blocks sunlight and traps moisture. Mulch light layers; remove heavy ones.
  2. Apply a fall fertilizer. Early fall and late fall feedings build roots and store energy for spring.
  3. Aerate and overseed. If you haven’t yet, early fall is prime time.
  4. Cut back perennials. Trim spent perennials and remove diseased foliage from beds.
  5. Lower the final cut. Drop to about 2.5” for the last mow of the year.
  6. Clean up beds. Pull weeds now so they don’t drop seed for next year.
  7. Book snow removal. Contracts fill up fast once the first forecast hits.
